Canned Wild Salmon
Surprisingly, canned wild salmon is very good -- as long as it's from a reputable company that provides quality wild salmon and uses BPA-free cans.
Most commonly canned salmons are Pink and Sockeye salmon.
Pink salmon is the smallest one of Pacific species. It lives in the range of the Pacific and Arctic coastal water and rivers.
Sockeye salmon or the red salmon is two to four times bigger than previous species. You can find it in Alaskan waters, in the eastern Pacific and near the northern Hokkaidō Island in Japan in the western Pacific. Also, it can be found north in the Canadian Arctic.
When it comes to the canning procedure, fish needs to be dressed and washed first. After washing salmon is cut into pieces and filled in previously sterilized cans with saline.
All cans undergo the double steaming process in a vacuum-sealed environment. This is done using pressurized steam for 90 minutes with 121.1 °C temperature. High temperatures and long steaming are necessary if manufacturers are determined to kill any harmful bacteria.
After the heating is done, cans are put under the cold running water to be chilled, dried and stored at temperatures between 10-15.5 °C.
Before leaving the canneries, every can is examined to ensure the safety of the fish and the can integrity. That way you get the best quality fish right on your table.
High-Quality Canned Wild Salmon
If you want to be sure that you are buying high-quality wild salmon, you should always check the label. These are the main things to look for:
You want your salmon to be wild, not farmed. Farmed salmon raises concerns about polychlorinated biphenyls, so you should stay away from it. If the label says “Atlantic“, the fish is farmed. However, Alaskan pink and sockeye salmon are usually wild-caught.
You want your cans to be the product of the USA. Some companies send out their fish in Asian countries, such as Thailand for processing. It's a long way for salmon to travel and it's quality after all that back and forth transport is questionable. If you see "product of Thailand" or something similar on the label, don't buy it.
You would like your salmon to be rich with Omega-3s. Health experts recommend from 250-500 milligrams of these fats per day for healthy people, and up to 1000 milligrams for individuals who suffer from heart diseases. Look for the label to know how to align your daily intake with expert's recommendation. Be aware that boneless and skinless salmon has about three times less Omega-3s than the regular one.
The same goes for calcium. Bones and skin will get you more calcium; four ounces of canned salmon will supply you with about 20% of needed daily value. On the other hand, if you buy premium salmon, without bones, you are losing on this. So, generally, if you want higher quality always go with the regular salmon and not the premium one.
Canned salmon is much cheaper than the fresh one, but it doesn’t mean it lacks healthy nutrients. It may even provide certain health benefits because it contains around 25 grams of proteins and a little above 2 grams of unsaturated fats.
Be careful: There are a lot of certified organic salmon on the market. Don’t be fooled by the certified organic label. They are still farmed fish. And a farmed fish is never going to be as nutritional as a wild fish. A certified organic label doesn’t mean much when it comes to wild salmon and other fish.
Tinned salmon sold at the supermarket is wild if it says wild or wild caught. Make sure your purchase tinned salmon that is in brine as opposed to industrial seed oils like canola oil or vegetable oil which are highly processed, high in inflammation-promoting omega 6s and basically toxic to the human body (but that’s a whole other discussion).
There is a lot of other farmed seafood on the market. If you're not sure, always ask! By law they must answer you truthfully if you ask them outright. I always gauge their level of honesty by asking them about their salmon and ocean trout because I know for a fact that they will be farmed so if they answer that they are wild, I politely smile then bolt out the door.
Try to buy the whole fish as opposed to fillets. It gives you a better indication of freshness. Inspect eyes and moistness of the skin. If the lips and face look even a little dehydrated then opt for something else. Buying whole fish means that you can ask the fishmonger to fillet it for you and ask them to put the head and frame in a separate bag for you to take home to make a stock (for bone broth).
The Benefits of Canned Wild Salmon:
Vitamin B12 – Canned salmon is rich in this vitamin; it covers more than you need on a daily basis. B12 promotes the production of red blood cells, and that way helps the transportation of the oxygen trough your body. It encourages healthy brain function and may have a protective role when it comes to heart diseases.
Niacin – This is a B vitamin that supports skin and nerve health. It provides the normal function of your digestive system and may lower your cholesterol levels.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids – the fresh salmon, produces twice as much of these acids, but the canned one still provides an impressive amount. Omega-3 fatty acids will potentially lower your triglyceride levels and support healthy neurological and retinal development. Also, the canned salmon contains more of these acids in comparison to other canned fish (tuna and mackerel).

Low Mercury Levels – As mercury is a toxic substance, it’s good to know that salmon by itself contains less mercury than other fish. Additionally, canned salmon contains less of this substance than canned tuna or canned mackerel.
How To Use Canned Salmon?
You can eat it straight out of the can, since it has already been cooked. But, you can warm it up if you choose -- just don't overcook it!
The only thing you need to do is to open the can, squeeze in some lemon juice if you like, get your fork and go for it.
Another way is basically the same as the first version, just add some chopped celery and cocktail sauce if you like.
If you are up for some Mediterranean flavors, get your canned salmon, drain a little of its juice, pour on some olive oil and add chopped onions. This will get you a very rich flavor.

Eating yogurt (or kefir) made from grass-fed raw milk is an excellent way to boost your immunity and increase your daily energy. This fruit's 4 to 5 grams of fiber not only are filling but also help ferry out some of the fat and calories you take in from other foods.
The proof: People who ate an apple 15 minutes before lunch on cheese tortellini consumed 187 fewer calories in total than those who snacked on nothing beforehand, a study from Penn State University in University Park determines. How about them apples?
Beets
These crimson root vegetables are sweet, rich and buttery; and, provide nutritional value to the eyes, cardiovascular system and immune system.
Lower Blood Pressure. Beets are very effective at lowering your blood pressure because they contain nitrates, which are converted into nitric oxide that relaxes and dilates your blood vessels, improving blood flow and lowering your blood pressure.
A 2008 American Heart Association study reported that beet (otherwise known as beetroot) juice helps in bringing blood pressure down.
According to Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., author of The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth (Fair Winds Press), beets are loaded with potassium, which also helps to lower blood pressure.

A little known fact: one red bell pepper has twice as much vitamin C as an orange. “They’ve long been used to treat arthritis and gout symptoms,” says Bazilian. Research in animals and humans suggests they can help relieve arthritis and post-workout muscle soreness, lower cholesterol and possibly even reduce body fat, according to a 2009 University of Michigan study.
Where to get it: Your cheapest bet: Buy them canned, for about $2.50 each, in the baking aisle. Tart cherries have the same zippy flavor as cranberries and taste good in smoothies or mixed with other fruits.
Chia Seeds | Reverse Diabetes Diet Plan
High in protein and loaded with fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds are a nutritional powerhouse. The flour made from these nutty-tasting seeds is a great addition to a diabetes-friendly kitchen. “It actually lowers blood sugar due to the fiber and omega-3 fatty acid content,” says Amy Jamieson-Petonic, RD, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and director of coaching at Cleveland Clinic.
There's some evidence that chia seeds help reduce belly fat -- the kind that contributes to insulin resistance. Substitute a quarter of your regular flour with chia flour (and experiment with higher ratios) in just about any baked good. Order the flour online, find it at health-food stores, or grind chia seeds in a food processor.
Cinnamon
The bark of Cinnamomum trees contains phytochemicals that enhance insulin signaling and facilitate glucose uptake and storage by the body’s cells. Studies have shown that as little as a teaspoon of cinnamon a day may significantly decrease fasting blood glucose levels and increase insulin sensitivity.
There are lots of ways to add more cinnamon to your diet. Sprinkle some in your tea, stir it into your morning smoothie, or add it to rubs for chicken or fish.
The two major types of cinnamon used in food preparation are Ceylon cinnamon and Cassia cinnamon. While both Cassia and Ceylon are derived from the inner bark of Cinnamomum trees, Ceylon cinnamon is preferable because it is considered a finer quality spice due to its sweeter, more delicate and complex flavor.
In addition to flavor, a critical difference between Ceylon and Cassia is the coumarin content of Cassia. Cassia contains high levels of coumarin, whereas Ceylon contains either undetectable levels or only traces of coumarin. Coumarin is a naturally occurring toxin which has the potential to damage the liver in high doses.
However, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment concluded that you'd need to take about a gram per day -- 1,000 milligrams -- for six months or longer to be at risk.
Tip: Buy cinnamon sticks instead of ground cinnamon. Most of the ground cinnamon is anywhere from 6 months to 2 years old!
The unique taste of fresh cinnamon comes from its natural oils. But, cinnamon loses a lot of these oils (and nutrients) during the industrial grinding process, under the heat generated by the whirring blades.
Citrus Fruit
Citrus fruit such as grapefruit, oranges, lemons and limes provide soluble fiber and vitamin C. The white part right underneath the skin contains hesperdin, a flavanone glycoside that fights cancer. Specifically, the limonoid compounds in limes have been shown to prevent cancers of the colon, stomach and blood.
Though the exact mechanism is unknown, scientists have observed that antioxidant limonoids also cause cancer cell death. Lime limonoids also stay active longer in your bloodstream, mopping more free radicals than green tea or dark chocolate.
Note: Citric acid is a natural inhibitor of kidney stones made of crystallized calcium. Go for fresh lime juice squeezed into water, as opposed to commercial limeades, for maximal benefits.
